“Let’s get to know your thyroid!”
Your thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck just below the center of your throat. It’s part of an intricate network of glands called the endocrine system. Your endocrine system is responsible for coordinating many of your body’s activities. Your thyroid gland manufactures hormones that regulate your body’s metabolism.
The signs and symptoms of thyroid vary, depending on the severity of the hormone deficiency. Problems tend to develop slowly, over a number of years.
Fatigue and weight gain is a symptom you may simply attribute to getting older. But you may develop more-obvious problems as you get older.
Several issues may arise when your thyroid produces too much hormone (hyperthyroidism) or not enough (hypothyroidism).
In hyperthyroidism, your thyroid gland is overactive. It produces too much thyroid hormone. Leads to symptoms like restlessness, nervousness, irritability, sweating, anxiety, trouble sleeping, thin skin, brittle hair and nails, and muscle weakness.
Too little thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism) production leads to symptoms such as fatigue, dry skin and hair, constipation, depression, heavy and irregular menstruation, and fertility problems.
Ayurveda and Thyroid disorders
Thyroid problems like any other disease are classified into doshas in Ayurveda. Hypothyroidism is categorized into five types based on whether it is caused by Vata, Pitta, Kapha, (Air, Fire, and Water elements in the body) or urinary tract infections (mainly in females), and ultimately the “goiter” type, which is characterized by a noticeable swelling of the thyroid gland around the neck.
